London (December 2010)

The ‘Smile For London’ competition searched for ten 20 second animations to screen on the London Underground platform screens as an initiative to bring a little cheer to the morning commute. My film ‘Wake Up’ made the shortlisted 50, which was great given that this was not long after I had graduated. For this I wanted to create a really loose, scratchy and boiling line style, and at the time I only had access to Flash. I modelled a 3D background based on my bedroom at the time in Softimate XSI  which I had a little knowledge in, and animated over the exported footage in Flash to match the loose animation of the foreground. I thought that designing this in greyscale might help set it apart from some of the other submissions and compliment the ‘handdrawn’ look I was going for.
